Gr. 6^-10. "Our Stories" is meant to be a companion to "What's Your Story?" (1992), which "explores issues of craft more fully," and "Writer's Story" (1995), which "focuses on the role of inspiration in the writing of fiction." Here young authors learn to refine fiction writing techniques--develop characters, create effective dialogue, establish point of view, etc.--by examining 30 selections written by students in grades 4 through 12. Bauer critiques each piece, pointing out strengths and suggesting ways the writing could be more effective. She then encourages readers to rewrite the sample, focusing on specific elements. Budding writers will find this of interest as will language-arts teachers, who may want to add copies to their classroom collections. Gr 6-10-In this easy-to-follow writing workshop, Bauer presents the basic elements of a good story, illustrating each with pieces written by students in grades 4-12. By responding to each example and discussing revision techniques, the book takes budding authors step-by-step through the construction of a narrative. The suggestions for each individual piece can be applied to any type of writing. The students' work adds enough variety and interest to keep the attention of most young people, but it will have a special appeal to any who might want to be published or who are having trouble organizing their thoughts and putting them on paper. Autobiographical statements from the young people give insight as to what motivates them to write, as well as some personal information that lends immediacy. Bauer helps guide young authors toward good writing styles, while still encouraging them to explore their creative thoughts.-Tracey Kroll, Brookland Middle School, Richmond, VA
