Grades 1-3 National Geographic Kids presents an intriguing collection of brief biographies of men and women from all occupations, walks of life, and historical eras. Artists, inventors and scientists, explorers, and human rights leaders are introduced in short informational passages and arranged chronologically, from notorious Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun to Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai. A brief profile introduces each subject with essential biographical information with quotes dotting the margins. The real star of each entry, however, is the graphics, which include photographs, illustrations, artifacts, maps, and other ephemera. Some names are ubiquitous, while others may be unfamiliar to young readers, but the variety of people included manages to be both historically comprehensive, geographically diverse, and relevant to modern current events. An appendix of resources for parents is organized by topic and provides ideas for enrichment activities and additional readings. The browser-friendly visual layout and quality of information live up to readers' expectations for National Geographic Kids books and account for much of the appeal of this irresistible biographical primer.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
