A counting book that highlights the wonders of winter

It's wintertime! The time for snow, mittens, and 12 days of surprises. In this high-energy, curious classroom, the teacher introduces her students to a new winter activity every day—from making paper snowflakes, to building sugar cube igloos, to playing with jingling bells. As the days get colder and the gifts add up, the classroom is transformed into wintery chaos. Inspired by the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas," this book uses accumulative verse as readers count to 12 along with the class and explore the funny, intricate illustrations. It includes a punch-out snowman paper doll that young readers can dress up and use to decorate their own winter wonderland!

K-Gr 3-Once again, this team has used the familiar tune as the framework for a cumulative counting verse, this time with winter activities both indoors and out as the focal point. The verses themselves are a good fit for the melody, but they would be unremarkable if not accompanied by the clever and humorous illustrations. Each of the eight children in this busy classroom has a distinct personality, revealed through meticulous and consistent attention to detail on every spread. The child obsessed with horses takes every opportunity to make them, even as snowflake cutouts; another child dances throughout, and in the final spread creates a version of Degas "Little Dancer" out of snow. While the book would work well as a read- or sing-aloud, with so much to pore over and absorb in the art, it is best used for one-on-one sharing. A surefire choice to spice up the dreariest winter day."Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ"

This follow-up to [cf2]The Twelve Days of Kindergarten[cf1] has the tireless teacher giving her students various things to commemorate winter's first twelve days. As in [cf2]Kindergarten[cf1], the illustrations of the kids' messes hilariously undermine the perky text, written to the tune of the Christmas classic. And yes, the nose picker introduced in [cf2]Kindergarten[cf1] still has his finger up his schnoz.
