Eveen the Eviscerator is skilled, discreet, professional, and here for your most pressing needs in the ancient city of Tal Abisi. Her guild is strong, her blades are sharp, and her rules are simple. Those sworn to the Matron of Assassins—resurrected, deadly, wiped of their memories—have only three unbreakable vows.
First, the contract must be just. That's above Eveen's pay grade.
Second, even the most powerful assassin may only kill the contracted. Eveen's a professional. She's never missed her mark.
The third and the simplest: once you accept a job, you must carry it out. And if you stray? A final death would be a mercy.
When the Festival of the Clockwork King turns the city upside down, Eveen's newest mission brings her face-to-face with a past she isn't supposed to remember and a vow she can't forget.

Eveen the Eviscerator is a deadly and discreet contract killer, an operative of the Dead Cat Tail Assassins guild. Though she is not feline and has no tail, Eveen is indeed dead. Wiped of her memories and resurrected to serve a deity known as the Matron of Assassins, Eveen serves her patron goddess faithfully and professionally, adhering to the unbreakable vows that dictate the assassins' conduct--under penalty of true, final death. Then Eveen is thrust into a past she isn't supposed to remember and faced with a target she cannot kill. Employing an impressive emotional range, narrator Lynnette R. Freeman embodies the wide-ranging cast of characters, seamlessly shifting between anger, excitement, and grim acquiescence. Whether portraying the protagonist Eveen or the killer's latest unsettling target, Freeman's ability to separate and distinguish the many entertaining characters is nothing short of incredible. Clark's (A Master of Djinn) writes a fun, fast-paced popcorn novel elevated by Freeman's superb performance. VERDICT Listeners desiring a world with a unique identity and a delightfully unexpected twist will want to pick up this novel reminiscent of T. Kingfisher's A Sorceress Comes To Call and Kerstin Hall's Asunder.--Andy Myers
