Kevin J. Anderson's sequel to Spine of The Dragon brings bitter rivalry and blood feud—that might be the downfall of the human kingdoms.
Two continents at war, the Three Kingdoms and Ishara, have been in conflict for a thousand years. But when an outside threat arises—the reawakening of a powerful ancient race that wants to remake the world—the two warring nations must somehow set aside generations of hatred to form an alliance against a far more deadly enemy. Book One awakened the great dragon, and set the kingdoms at each other's throats.
In Book Two, Vengewar, the Three Kingdoms are shattering under pressure from an inexperienced new King who is being led by an ambitious regent to ignore the threat of the Wreths, in favor of a Vengewar with Ishara. His brother and uncle can see only the danger of the Older Race.
In Ishara, the queen lies in a coma, while an ambitious priest seizes power. But he has neither the training nor the talent to rule a nation— or even a city. Ishara is in deadly peril, and the Wreths have not even appeared on their continent.

Anderson’s heart-pounding second Wake the Dragon fantasy (after Spine of the Dragon) finds war building between humans, dragons, and the wreth—and those who should be fighting together are falling further apart. When half-human, half-wreth Utho murders Konag Conndur of the Commonwealth driven by his desire for vengeance against the Isharans, who slaughtered his people several generations ago, his actions set off a chain of events that could destroy humankind. The Isharan Empra Iluris simultaneously falls into a coma and each side frames the other, setting off the war between lands that Utho was hoping for. Key Priestlord Klovus uses the opportunity to seize control of Ishara, meanwhile the Commonwealth’s new Konag prepares to battle his human enemies—ignoring warnings from the two kings of the Commonwealth that the real threat is not from humans, but from the ancient wreth race who’ve returned after centuries and plan to destroy the world. Large-scale battles, magic, and multiple exciting story lines meld together to create a thrilling adventure. Readers will be hooked from the beginning to the shocking end.

The conclusion of Spine of the Dragon (2019) found the possibility of peace between the Three Kingdoms and Ishara that was dashed by the heinous murder of Konag Conndur, an attack that left the Empra of Ishara in a coma. Thus, Brava Utho of the Three Kingdoms and key priest Klovus took charge to carry out a vengewar across the sea separating their countries. King Kollanan of Norterra, brother of Conndur, is torn between the call for a vengewar and the greater threat of a conflict with two factions of Wreths, who created humans centuries ago. The icewreths and sandwreths have risen from two millennia of absence to renew their fight, and to destroy the dragon Ossus. King Adan Starfall, younger son of Conndur, allies himself with Kollanan, even though it puts him at odds with his brother, who is the successor to Conndur. The story is told from multiple perspectives, adding depth to the conflicts that arise in several locations and building to a nail-biting climax, leaving fans eager for the next volume in the Wake the Dragon series.
