Exploring the many faces of goddess mythologies, seasoned storyteller Clayton shows that the goddess' story is told in many tongues, and her form takes on many shapes, but her tale is a shared one. Clayton intertwines well-known stories from Egypt, Greece, and Christianity with less widely-known myths from Inuit, Aztec, and Norse lore, allowing the wisdom of diverse traditions to enrich the reader's understanding of the goddess as creator, virgin, warrior, lover, mother, and crone. Complementing Clayton's narrative, papercut illustrations from artist Sophie Herxheimer breathe life into each myth, and the simplicity of these images not only unifies the varied tales but also directs attention to the heart of the book: the tales of passion, death, power-- storytelling itself--all held within the female form. The goddess is just as likely to nurture as she is to wreak mass destruction. Clayton and Herxheimer's project is a woven one, relating the complex nature and stories of the goddess that transcend cultural boundaries.
